We hosted Julia Kane and Bonnie Flatow from the Sunrise Association at the GNS Library on December 15th. The talk covered pediatric cancer from the family side of the experience — what Sunrise Day Camp does, what camp means for a kid in treatment, and the concrete ways students can plug in.
Sunrise runs a free summer camp for children with cancer and their siblings. The camp is medically supported, and for many families it's the only week of the year that resembles a normal childhood. The economics are simple: the camp runs on donations, and every team that walks on June 14 funds more beds.
The speaker event led directly into our Walk to Give Summer Back team sign-ups. If that's a through-line we want — host speakers, feed the walk — this was a good proof of concept.
